Trustees

The team of up to nine Trustees are responsible for all compliance matters and decisions in managing and developing the Charity. Four Trustees are appointed by Kingsbridge Town Council, the rest are invited to join by the current Trustees based on their experience and expertise. Apart from the role of Secretary, the Trustees are unpaid volunteers who do the substantial work that goes into running the charity so they can give back to their local community.

John Donovan

Position: Trustee since 1988 and Chair since 2014

John attended Kingsbridge Primary and Grammar schools and after 6th Form he spent 3 years studying Engineering at Plymouth College. He worked at Hawker Siddeley Aviation where he designed civilian aircraft for 6 years, after which he returned to Kingsbridge and spent 35 years running the family furnishing business in Fore Street.

John is also a member of the Hallsands Housing Society Limited and a Trustee of the Hazelwood Trust.

Anne Balkwill

Position: Trustee since 2009

Anne was born and educated in Kingsbridge. She went on to work in London as a Marine Cargo Broker for three years and then read History and Politics at the University of Exeter. She returned to Kingsbridge and founded Selworthy Veterinary Group in 1989 with vet husband, Richard.

Anne is a member of Kingsbridge Community College Trust and a founder of Kingsbridge in Bloom. She has been a Town Councillor for 12 years and was a former Town Mayor.

Graham James

Position: Trustee since July 2024

Born in Exeter, Graham moved to Kingsbridge in 1976. He served as an apprentice Mechanical Engineer with Westbrick Engineering. After several career moves, he joined Diversity, a global cleaning and hygiene company, as a Sales Engineer, progressing to the Divisional Health Sector as their South West Team Manager.

In 2002, Graham took early retirement from Diversity, then he and his wife took over the lease of the Kings Arms Hotel in Kingsbridge until 2008.

Keith Wingate

Position: Trustee since November 2014

Keith was educated in Kingsbridge then worked for his father in the family building trade, before setting up another building company with a partner. When the partnership was dissolved, Keith set up another building company, this time on his own.

He has served as a Local and District Councillor and first became a Feoffees Trustee in November 2014; however, he has stepped down several times when there was a conflict of interest in his capacity as Councillor.

Michael Trembath

Position: Trustee since August 2023

Educated all the way through Primary, Secondary and 6th Form in Kingsbridge, Michael went on to pursue Marine Studies gaining Ocean Yacht Master and Advance Powerboat Instructor qualifications. In 2004, he returned to Kingsbridge to join his father, Roger, as the fourth generation of Trembath at Quay Garage Limited, now Quay Auto Centre. When his father retired, Michael took over the helm of this business.

Alongside a career within the franchised motor dealership; in 2006 he joined the Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue Service, serving as an on-call fire fighter from Kingsbridge Fire Station.

Mrs Julie White

Position: Trustee since July 2011

Julie is a chartered surveyor and member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and has experience in development, construction and property management across the private and public sectors.

She is a former housing association Chief Executive, is a Fellow of the Faculty of Building and a corporate member of the Chartered Institute of Housing. She is also a board member of a large Devon based housing association.

Beccy Bristow

Position: Trustee since August 2022

Beccy qualified as a solicitor in 2003 and has always practised in the West Country, although her clients are spread across the globe. She started her legal career in Exeter working for Ashfords Solicitors before moving firms working in Honiton, Sidmouth and Somerset before returning to Exeter.

She has specialised for nearly 20 years in administration of estates, Will drafting, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Inheritance Tax Advice, Trusts and legal issues relating to older people, including advice on funding for long term care.

She set up Start Point Law in Kingsbridge in 2016, where she is the sole solicitor and director of the company.

Robert Cattell

Position: Trustee since 2008

Robert was born and raised in Kingsbridge, working as a partner/senior auctioneer and valuer for Charles Head and Son Estate Agents for 40 years.

Now retired, he is still very active in the local community. He is a member of Hallsands Housing Society Limited and a Trustee for the Hazelwood Trust.

Anthony Head

Position: Trustee since 2022

Following his education in Devon he joined his father in the Kingsbridge based family business, Charles Head and Son Estate Agents, handling the sale, letting and management of properties. This afforded him a wealth of knowledge of the town and surrounding area.
