End March 2025

The clock face has now been restored and gold leaf has been added to enhance the appearance of the hands and numbers.

Early March 2025

Preliminary work has shown that the outer wood lintel above the oriel window (photo to left) has suffered with rot over the years (as seen below) and has moved, meaning the masonry above the oriel window is now leaning out by about 10cm, which will have to be corrected. To do this, the stones will be carefully removed and numbered, the wooden lintels will then be replaced, the stones reinstated and wood will complete the decorative shape; this will then be re-covered with leadwork to keep out the rain.

Early March 2025 continued. Sadly, this work cannot be started before the summer season, so after the restoration of the clock tower is finished in April, all the scaffolding will be removed. There will be two posts to support the oriel window over the summer, then in September the scaffolding around the front of the Town Hall and oriel window will be put back up again for the work to be completed.

Scaffolding went up and renovation work started.

This picture shows that rotten wood has been replaced with new. It is hoped the restored building and its famous clock will be ready to celebrate its 175 and 150 year anniversaries in 2025.
